LOCATIONS & WINERIES
from the Chile Episode
Santiago is the largest city in Chile, and about 1/3 of the country's population lives there. It's a fun city full of culture, art, great food, and better people. Use it as your fly-in city before heading to the wineries or as a hub if you don't mind driving. Don't forget to visit our friends at Blue Jar Restaurant for lunch!
San Pedro is one of the oldest wine companies in Chile, and its experience really shines through in its fine-wine project in Cachapoal, near the Andes mountains. Fresh, concentrated, elegant wines that all come from this unique tucked-away valley!
This is the first time I've seen a winery quite like VIK. They're committed to sustainability, and a Pritzker-nominated artist designed the facility's architecture. The wines are a great representation of winemaker Cristian's vision and obsession with detail, as well as their special plot of land in Millahue.
VIK also has a world-class hotel on-site, where a different artist designs each room. Three on-site restaurants feature local ingredients, and you can even go horseback riding on the property; this hotel is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
CASCADA DE LAS ÁNIMAS
If you fancy an adventure, I'd highly recommend visiting Cascada de las Ánimas and horseback riding through the Andes mountains. It was one of the most magical things I've ever done!
Montes is one of the wineries credited with putting Chilean wines on the map, pushing the country from quantity to quality with their high-end Cabernet terroir-driven blends. Purple Angel redefined what Carménère should be and is a wine that should be on everyone's bucket list!
FUEGOS DE APALTA
On-site at the Montes property, Fuegos de Apalta is world-renowned chef Francis Mallmann's tribute to fire! This is a transcendent dining experience surrounded by the vineyards of Montes!
Chile is capable of much more than richer-style red wine, and Leyda is proof. Their Sauvignon Blancs rival some of the world's best, as do their light but complex Pinot Noirs. The vineyards are situated right near the coast, and you can feel the influence of the ocean breezes on the wines.
SAIL + WINE CHILE
Venture a sail? Hit up our friend Tomas Sail & Wine Chile! He's also a passionate wine lover and will customize a boat tour to your exact desires, from wine and cheese at sunset to ocean fishing!
If you want to stay near Santiago but somewhere more quaint than the city, I can't recommend Casa Ishi enough! Michelle and Teiji have a little oasis they've made, and their guest house can accommodate 2-7 people. The crew and I stayed there most of our trip, and their hospitality helped make it memorable!
Luis and his winemaker Ignacio started Forajidos Wines after years of corporate life to create a lifestyle wine brand that could pair with rock concerts as easily as a fine dining table. The wines are fun, and each represents a different Chilean region! Look for them at Infiltrados Steakbar (below)!
A visit to Chile wouldn't be complete without an Asado. Head to Infiltrados Steakbar for grilled meats galore and a fun, energetic vibe. Make sure to pair your meal with a bottle of Forajidos wine!
